russell de carleLegendary Canadian artist Russell deCarle famously fronted iconic Canadian country roots band Prairie Oyster.

Over the years, they racked up an impressive list of JUNO and Canadian Country Music Awards, gold and platinum selling records and Number 1 singles. As a songwriter, he carried off two SOCAN Song of the Year accolades.

He is a classy performer whose heart knows how to deliver a lyric. There’s a luxuriously laid back rockabilly edge to the fluent mix of blues, jazz and R&B-tinged western swing that pays homage to some of his all-time favourites. His own songs are refreshing yet familiar all at once.

These days, he’s gone back to much more pared-back rootsy basics to tour in trio format and, bound together by a superb level of playing and performance that is rare and precious, is joined by superlative seasoned sidekicks Denis Keldie (accordion) and Steve Briggs (acoustic guitar) to become as close to joined-at-the-hip perfection as can ever be encountered.

Distilled from the soundtrack he grew up with, and all of the good stuff absorbed since setting out as a performer, the set list ends up as full-bodied, rich and satisfying as a bottle of deluxe Scotch whisky. The musicianship is dazzling even when the tone is understated and in the gentlest of ‘nice and easy does it’ grooves.

Golden-haired deCarle delivers his rock ‘n’ roll in crowned-King crooner style as his monstrously talented sidekicks take virtuoso into a stratosphere that lies somewhere between JJ Cale and the very best Gyspy Jazz you ever heard.
