Mental health awareness festival First Fortnight’s Donegal debut blends local and national acts from the spheres of music, song, drama and comedy with short talks from local mental health advocates and video inserts from household names.

The night is headlined by comedian and wellbeing ‘Banarama’ guru Kevin McAleer whose deadpan genius and anarchic Irish wit has earned him a large and deserved cult following. Joining him on the bill are Beyond Blue Choir from Work-link, Dungloe who formed their choir to harness the wellbeing benefits of singing, Mo Bhagaiste – an original bi-lingual reading by Pol O Gallachoir inspired by the work of Seosamh MacGrianna and Wee Small Gods who will lift spirits with their set of reggae-infused original music.

Interspersed among the performances are short talks from local health advocates including Bill Vaughan of Mental Health Ireland & Donegal Mind Wellness, Maria Coleman and Linda Ui Ghallachoir of LAMHA (Life Affirming Mental Health Action, Angeline Driver of Cycle Against Suicide and Peadar McDaid of Create-A-Link.

This unique evening, coordinated by Comhcheol Arts and Wellness, will also have a special visit from your favourite childhood superstar Bosco!

First Fortnight is a charity that challenges mental health prejudice through arts and cultural action. The First Fortnight festival makes the first two weeks of each year synonymous with mental health awareness, challenging prejudice and ending stigma by creating a consistent space in the cultural calendar where citizens can be inspired through arts events to talk about mental health issues in a non-scripted manner. This helps to change people’s perceptions about the ordinary experience of a mental health problem and the less ordinary experience of mental ill health.
